The story of Dae Han Moo Do Kwan (DHMDK) spans decades and continents. From its origins in South Korea to its home in Lidcombe, New South Wales, DHMDK Australia carries forward a tradition of disciplined training, strong spirit, and respect for the way of the sword.

DHMDK's roots stretch back to 1961 in South Korea, where the organisation was established by Master Seong Shik Song. Under his guidance, DHMDK forged a fierce reputation for elite martial arts training, discipline, and character building. His influence remains a guiding light for DHMDK dojos around the world, including the South Korea, United States, New Zealand and Australia.

In 1994, Master Byung Kwan Song brought that legacy to Sydney, Australia by founding DHMDK Australia. His vision was clear: to preserve the traditional methods of Kendo and build a dojo culture grounded in respect, perseverance, and mental strength.

Over nearly three decades, Master B.K. Song made a lasting contribution to the Australian Kendo community. Under his leadership, DHMDK Australia grew into a highly respected dojo, known for its intense training energy, technical precision, and annual DHMDK Championships, which became a well-recognised event among Kendo clubs across New South Wales.

In August 2023, Master B.K. Song officially passes the DHMDK legacy and head instructor duties to Master Dwight Park, continuing the legacy of DHMDK while embracing new perspectives and opportunities for the future.

In Honour of
Master Byung Kwan Song

To the teacher who taught me everything, not just kendo itself, but how to be a better person throughout my daily life.

Master Song wasn't a man of many words and everyone around him knew that. The aura around him and the respect that so many other teachers and students had for him was astounding. He spoke through his body and his sword, with his character reflected through his practice. People respected him because he led by example.

Master Song has always said that a person needs to be humble, be disciplined, courageous and not fall to the temptation of boasting about small wins or show disrespect to others. This is what kendo is. He demonstrated these values through his practice and the way he lived. In kendo, the sword reflects the heart. It never lies.

Master Song's legacy lives on through all of us who learn at DHMDK. We strive to be humble, disciplined, respectful and courageous not just through kendo but our lives.

Our Philosophy

Respect

At DHMDK, respect is the foundation of our practice. Every training session begins and ends with respect for one another, recognising that every person on the dojo floor has value, regardless of age, rank, or experience.

Through respect, we develop not only our technique, but also our mind and spirit. It teaches us humility, the right attitude, and the discipline to continue learning and improving throughout our Kendo journey.

Discipline

Talent matters. Skills matter. Knowledge matters. But none of these will carry you to the summit without discipline. Motivation may start your journey, but it is temporary. Discipline is what keeps you climbing when the path becomes difficult and leads you to the top of the mountain.

Spirit

The Kendo spirit we forge through respect, discipline, growth, and daily practice extends far beyond the dojo. The lessons we learn through training become the foundation for how we approach our family, friendships, school, and work. Regardless of age or background, when we cultivate a strong spirit, the possibilities are limitless.

"Even a small spark can burn a mountain."

Growth

Through physical training, our bodies become stronger and faster. But through the growth of our mind and spirit, we learn that true strength goes beyond physical ability.

The size of the body does not define the size of the spirit. With dedication and perseverance, we can continue to overcome our limitations and achieve growth beyond what we once thought possible.

At DHMDK, we improve ourselves 1% at a time, strengthening both our mind and body. While each person follows their own path, we also continue to grow together as a Kendo family!
